Elephant “fence” made of stones

Situation

Installation of gutters and water tanks was done in 2022 to mitigate water shortages. During the current rainy season, water tanks are filled, but with the start of the next dry seasion there is a danger from elephants for the water tanks.

    Why is this?

An elephant needs approximately 200 liters of water per day – during the dry season, the animals also suffer and are very good at finding and accessing water sources (tanks are then destroyed by tusks). An elephant is not alone – a group can easily destroy several water tanks in one night.

    What did we do?

Installation of stone “fences” around the water tanks (see picture) – Elephants have soft soles and cannot walk over sharp stones (already successfully tested by another project).
